Zagreb is a city with a rich history dating from the Roman times to the present day. The oldest settlement located in the vicinity of the city was the Roman Andautonia, in today’s Ščitarjevo.
The name “Zagreb” is recorded in 1134, in reference to the foundation of the settlement at Kaptol in 1094. Zagreb became a free royal town in 1242. in 1851 Zagreb had its first mayor, Janko Kamauf.
Zagreb has special status as a Croatian administrative division and is a consolidated city-county (but separated from Zagreb County), and is administratively subdivided into 17 city districts. Most of them are at a low elevation along the river Sava valley, whereas northern and northeastern city districts, such as Podsljeme and Sesvete districts are situated in the foothills of the Medvednica mountain, making the city’s geographical image rather diverse. The city extends over 30 kilometres (19 miles) east-west and around 20 kilometres (12 miles) north-south.
Almost all of the largest Croatian companies, media, and scientific institutions have their headquarters in the city. Zagreb is the most important transport hub in Croatia where Central Europe, the Mediterranean and Southeast Europe meet, making the Zagreb area the centre of the road, rail and air networks of Croatia. The cinema is located at Kaptol, the old city core from where Zagreb started to grow and develop through history.
Close by is the Zagreb Cathedral, built in 1217. This Roman Catholic institution is not only the tallest building in Croatia but also the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps.
Not far away is Dolac, the most visited and the best known farmer’s market in Zagreb, well known for its combination of traditional open market with stalls and a sheltered market below.
Only few minutes away is the Stone Gate (Kamenita Vrata) – one of the more noteworthy landmarks of the Upper Town of Zagreb. It was built in the 13th century, and got its present look in the 18th century.
500 meters from the cinema is the Lotrščak Tower. The name is derived from Latin campana latrunculorum, meaning “thieves’ bell”, referring to a bell hung in the tower in 1646 to signal the closing of the town gates. Everyday a cannon from the tower shoots exactly at noon.
Zagreb’s main Ban Jelačić Square is only 10 minutes away walking, through one of the most beautiful Tkalčićeva street, adored by tourists visiting Zagreb.

21 orphans from Manyara – Tanzania are living without any hope, without water, food or medicines. Without parents, without a place where to sleep or to eat, having no reason to smile.
We found them sad, hungry and thirsty, at the AC Day Care and Orphanage-Manyara, Arusha. There is an angel taking care of them. A 70 years old lady, Angela Chabai, helped by two young volunteers.
Together WE CAN CHANGE THEIR LIVES!
Building two bedrooms, a dining room and two toilets, but first a water network. This is not only what we want, but our mission since we visited them, three years ago. We will go back there with a volunteers team in 2023., transforming all this dreams into reality.
We need you, your kindness and your smile to help this little kids to have a life, to bring them HOPE and a REASON TO SMILE! Maybe for the first time in their lives.
